Market context

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te faces potential impeachment proceedings in the Legislative Yuan, where a two-thirds majority would be required to formally impeach him. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) currently holds a legislative plurality but lacks the supermajority needed for impeachment without cross-party support. Historical precedent suggests impeachment of a sitting Taiwanese president remains exceptionally rare; Chen Shui-bian faced removal attempts only after leaving office, whilst Lee Teng-hui and Ma Ying-jeou completed their terms without formal impeachment votes. The 3% implied probability reflects the structural difficulty of assembling sufficient opposition votes whilst Lai retains DPP backing and maintains reasonable approval ratings.

Catalysts for impeachment would require either a dramatic political realignment, severe scandal involving Lai personally, or fracturing within the DPP itself. The Legislative Yuan's composition remains stable through June 2026, with no scheduled elections altering the balance. Traders should monitor cross-strait tensions, domestic corruption allegations, or unexpected coalition shifts between the opposition Kuomintang and China Unification Promotion Party, though such developments remain speculative. Recent reporting from Taiwan's official government sources indicates no active impeachment proceedings as of early 2025.

From a regulatory perspective, this market's accessibility depends on jurisdiction. Under German GlüStV regulations, prediction markets face strict licensing requirements. US CFTC oversight applies to derivatives on political events if they meet certain thresholds. Many platforms offer no-KYC trading up to $1,500 notional exposure, allowing retail participation without identity verification below that threshold, though settlement and withdrawal procedures vary by operator.

FAQ

Is Polymarket legal in my country?
Polymarket is geo-blocked in the US/UK/EU. Actual usage via the Polymarket interface is not possible there. The legal status itself varies — many countries treat prediction markets as a gray area. PolyGram has a different geo footprint.
Can I trade anonymously?
Pseudonymously, yes — up to the KYC threshold. PolyGram stores an email address and wallet addresses rather than a legal name. Over $1,500 lifetime volume triggers KYC, after which identity is no longer anonymous.
Are prediction markets gambling?
Legally unclear in most jurisdictions. Some interpretations classify them as wagering (gambling regulation applies), others as derivatives (financial regulation applies). There's no global precedent specifically for on-chain prediction markets.
Is there a withdrawal cap?
No platform-side cap. You can withdraw any amount provided KYC is complete. SEPA bank withdrawals over €15,000 trigger additional anti-money-laundering checks (statutory obligation for all platforms).
What if regulation changes?
If regulation changes in your jurisdiction (e.g. prediction markets are banned), PolyGram would geo-block the affected region and continue processing withdrawals. Your funds remain withdrawable at any time.
